North Caicos

North Caicos, the second largest in the Turks and Caicos Islands, is sparsely populated. This is definitely one of the most diverse and the most interesting islands in this British Overseas Territory. The causeway connects North Caicos with island of Middle Caicos.

After the American Revolutionary War, refugees loyal to the British crown received land to settle in Turks and Caicos. Established in 1789, Wade's Green Plantation was one of the most prosperous. Based on hard slave labor, plantations cultivated mainly cotton yielding them large profits. However, they all survived not more than 30 years. The main causes of the destruction were the soil exhaustion and prolonged drought.
