Nicaragua is known as "the land of lakes and volcanoes". Many volcanoes of the Central American Volcanic Arc, which stretches from Mexico to Panama, are found here. Of Nicaragua's 23 volcanoes, 19 are currently considered active. Volcanic eruptions have often destroyed human settlements, but also enriched the land with layers of fertile ash. The geological activity in this region is also the cause of powerful earthquakes.
