Honduras in Central America is often referred to as the "banana republic". The derogatory term originally comes from a 19th-century fiction novel and describes a poor and corrupt country with an economy dependent on a single product. If you add to that the fact that the country has one of the highest murder rates in the world, that could explain why tourists avoid Honduras.
