Driving through the US during the lockdown

March 29 - April 1

After short rest in Mineral de Pozos we started the final leg on the way home. It was Sunday, after 11 hours of driving, we stood at the border with the United States in Nueve Laredo. Things changed here when compared to our previous experiences. There was no line of cars and no Mexican street venders on the bridge. The US border officials were present in the middle of the bridge, right on the physical border between countries. They asked to see the covers of our passports. It was a tangible proof that border is closed to foreign travelers.

We were soon in Texas. The monotonous and eventless drive home began. All states along the way had restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic. Border officers were actually the last people we had contact. To stay safe along the way, we did not even interact with one person. We had our own food, I filled tank myself at gas stations, and we did not stop at any of rest areas on highways. We did not even go to one store along the way. Driving on the roads, however, it was impossible to say that this country was under lockdown. The roads were as busy as usual and there was an undisturbed movement of people and goods. Driving constantly with only short stops, we arrived home at 3 AM on Wednesday.
