The history of the Likava Castle in Slovakia goes back to the mid-14th century. The Hungarian Royal Castle, originally built in the Gothic style was later modified in the Renaissance style. In 1703, during the Hungarian War of Independence against the Habsburgs, the castle was seized by the troops of its leader, Francis II Rákoczi. As a consequence, the castle was heavily damaged by the same Hungarians during their retreat a few years later.
