Napoleon died on May 5, 1821 in exile on Saint Helena in the Atlantic Ocean and was buried there. Almost twenty years later, his remains returned to France. Napoleon's final resting place is a massive red quartzite stone sarcophagus in the crypt of the Dôme des Invalides church in Paris.
