Fort Saint Elmo has a very long military history. It played a key role during Great Siege of Malta in 1565. Fort withstood the massive bombardment from the Ottoman Turks falling to enemy hands after 28 days of siege. During World War II, like the whole of Malta, fort was the site of the strong aerial bombardments. In 1941, it withstood a seaborne attack carried out by Italians.
