Doors of Versailles

The Palace of Versailles has around 700 rooms, most of which are interconnected. There are even more doors in the palace. Almost all of them are richly decorated and covered with golden motifs. Doors often contain symbolism like the royal crossed letters L or sun symbol representing Louis XIV, the Sun King.

After the French Revolution of 1789 there was widespread antagonism to anything related to royalty. All the furnishings and works of art of the Palace, including mirrors, baths and kitchens, were sold at auctions. All royal emblems and fleurs-de-lys have been removed from the doors. Renovations after many years focused on recreating the original décor and restoring doors to its former glory.
