In the past Torajans were buried in the wooden decorated coffins - with the shape similar to the roofs of the tongkonan houses - placed in caves. Tampangallo Cave, former burial place of the family claimed to decent from the mythical ancestor who introduced unusual funeral rituals in the Torajan society. Collection of tau tau (wooden human figures) is not so old and was probably added to increase the attractiveness of this place to visitors.
