Historically the island attracted little interest from the white traders. It was mostly because first Europeans like Capt. Cook noticed that inhabitants of Malakula (today part of Vanuatu) especially Small Nambas are fierce warriors and cannibals. Because of this reputation Malakula's cultural traditions have been left intact and island avoided epidemics that devastated other populations in Oceania.
