Kasuga Taisha was founded in 709 and dedicated to the Fujiwara clan deity of Kashima Jingu (which was named the guardian of the new capital at Nara) and three divine warriors. This celebrated Shinto shrine is famous for thousands of stone lanterns donated by worshipers since 11th century. Another thousand, made of bronze hang from the eaves of the buildings.
